Stained Glass of St John Maddermarket Church,Norwich

The beautiful church of St John Maddermarket is located in the heart of the city of Norwich. The buildings that crowd around the church add to its ambience with the adjacent Maddermarket Alley actually passing under its tower.

The church is square in plan with slender 15th century arcades and a tall clerestorey of the same date. Although greatly altered in 1863 (following a gas explosion), the nave roof is outstanding, displaying as it does some fine medieval timberwork. Other features include a fine selection of monuments and a striking Georgian reredos.

Most of the medieval stained glass was destroyed by a combination of Cromwell's 17th century forces and a 19th century gas explosion. The remaining fragments are now displayed in the north aisle windows.
